What's New

Log of Changes to the Assiniboine Forest Trails / Plant Life / Fine Art Websites

April 23, 2024: Modified references to the Artwork site to say "by current and former members" of the Charleswood Art Group.

April 22, 2024: A problem with my hip has prevented me from visiting the forest since last November, but over the past year I have accumulated a number of plant identifications and scenic photos, which I will add soon.

March 28, 2023: Several new artists have been added to the Artist pages, bring us to 10 contributors.  Also a number of paintings have added to the pages of artists who were already on this web site.

January 31, 2023: Completed populating the Unlocated Plants photo pages with stock photos from the internet, for the purpose of plant recognition & identification.  These pages are private for my use only.

January 21, 2023: Completed revising pages in Plants to convert the list of plants at the top of each page to jump links, to go directly to that particular plant's photos.  Also completed revising the Plants pages to add the Botanical Name, alternate Common Names, and Origin (Native or Introduced) directly below the heading for each plant.  In the process, moved a few plants around to different pages.

January 15, 2023: A List of Unlocated Plants page has been added which includes names of plants found on the City's Habitat Site Report but which I have not yet located or photographed.  Four additional pages have been created, currently empty, but intended for gradually adding stock photos of those plants (i.e. from the internet or from book scans) for the purpose of further identification.

January 13, 2023: Index pages have been added by Common Name and by Botanical Name.  The Index is the last item in the menu at the top of the screen.  The Botanical Index page is accessed from the main (Common Name) Index.

January 11, 2023: Started on a plan to add major enhancements to the Plants site over the coming few months:

  1. An Index page to Plants, to allow quick access, by the plant's Common Name, to the web page on which that plant's photos are located.
  2. A similar Index by Botanical Name.
  3. A List of Unlocated Plants page (based on the Habitat Site Report), along with auxiliary pages for stock photos.
  4. Further detail on the Plant pages under each heading (Botanical Names, alternate Common Names, Native/Introduced).
  5. Hyperlinks will be added to the list of Plant Names at the top of each Plant page.

January 8, 2023: Added two new artists to Artwork, and nine new paintings.

January 2, 2023: Completed the process of updating the Plants pages with better and additional photos of each species, based on photos taken over the past year.  Added entries for several species not previously identified.

December 11, 2022: Put a recommendation in the main page of Trails, Plants, and Artwork to suggest visiting these sites using PC or tablet, rather than a smart phone.  This is because on a smart phone (Android with Chrome, at least), it is impossible to navigate directly back to Trails from a plant category page or from an artist page - it has to be done from the main Plants page or the main Artwork page.

December 9, 2022: Added many new photos from 2022 to the Scenic pages.

January 31, 2022: Added close-ups on the Odds & Ends page to display features of the forest visible from satellite views.

December 13, 2021: Added many photos to the Scenic pages (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring Melt), and added a Spring page.

December 12, 2021: Reorganized most of the pages in a4Plants to do a better job of grouping similar species.  Structured the tables of contents on each page to correspond to this grouping.

December 11, 2021: Added more plant identifications, mainly from summer and autumn photos, and many additional photos.

September 4, 2021: Added a trail map of the North Forest.

September 3, 2021: Revised the Historical page with information on the sale of the Chapman forested lands to the City, and restructured a lot of clumsy writing.

June 11, 2021: Added more plant identifications, mostly based on spring photos from two excursions into the forest.  Revised Plants home page.

June 7, 2021: Split Mosses & Lichens out into separate pages.

May 10, 2021: Added more identifications to Mosses, Lichens, Horsetails.  Added more plants to Wetland Plants.

May 9, 2021: Removed navigation bar from the top of the screen in Trails, Plants, & Artwork.

May 8, 2021: Added Aspen Bark to the main Plants menu.  Modified most page titles in Trails, Plants, & Artwork to facilitate search engine optimization.

May 7, 2021: After two bark examination trips into the forest, updated the Aspen Bark Exploration page with many additional photos and comments.

May 5, 2021: Completed enhancements for search engine optimization through revision of heading format, a few revisions of heading text, and through the addition of alt. text behind all images.

May 4, 2021: Added new artwork by Shirley Rayner.  Refinements to the Historical page.

May 3, 2021: Web site is complete, subject to content additions and revisions.  Populated the remaining plant pages: Wildflowers, Weeds, and Grass & Such.  Created the Aspen bark exploration page.

May 2, 2021: Populated the Trees, Shrubs & Berries, Climbers, Fungi, Forest Floor, and Prairie Floor pages.  Spelling & grammar check of entire website.  Added Pageview stats.

May 1, 2021: Revised the Historical page.  Added two more topics to Odds & Ends.  Added artwork and photos from one more artist.  Made the plant Identified List public.
